A message from Wg Cdr Cooper:

Sirs, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please see details of a proposed Community Event for early 2023.  There is a significant caveat.  Please note that, though I am willing to coordinate the planning of this, my hectic schedule will preclude me from doing this by myself.  Therefore, the proposed event will only take place should a volunteer come forward from the British Community to assist.  Should no-one come forward by 31 Mar 2022 then the offer would be rescinded.

BLACK FOREST WEEKEND

Up to 4 day (3 night) trip to Feldberg over the weekend of 18-19 Feb 2023.  Presidents’ Day is on Mon 20 Feb 23 and almost guaranteed to be a NATO Holiday.  This day is also expected to be ‘Fasching’ in 2023 (party time!).

Therefore, the weekend could either be offered up for a Fri & Sat night stay or Fri thru Sun night stay for families depending on their circumstance.

This is NOT designed as a replacement to the Garmisch ski trip, it is an alternative that could attract people who either want to explore the Black Forest or have young families who wish to ski in a relatively benign environment (conditions permitting) or do not wish to spend so much time travelling (which is inevitably the case with Garmisch).

Scope:  Up to 25 families in the Best Western in Breitnau.  The hotel has recently been extended in size (I think now has 79 rooms) so this should be achievable with enough notice.

Black Forest cards would be included (free of charge) which offer free ski passes and numerous other benefits.

Provisional Cost:  After SAF subsidy, 3 nights expected to be no more than 350 euro per family of 4.  For 2 adults this could come in around 175 euro.

Advantages:

Trip can appeal to wide x-section of community; non-skiers as well as they can take advantage of Black Forest Card (includes brewery trip!); Freiburg nearby (beautiful old city).  Spa visits etc etc…

Badaparadies for all ages.  This is simply amazing!!

Great hotel for the price.

Brewery trip to Rothaus Brewery included in the Black Forest Card.

Much of public transport free with Black Forest card.

City of Freiberg nearby – historic university city.

Relatively short trip to/from Black Forest.

Possibility of skiing (with free ski passes) all across Black Forest should conditions permit.

Free Ski Tubing in Lenz (near Feldberg) should conditions permit.

Cost of ski trip (equipment hire, ski passes, hotac etc) significantly cheaper than Garmisch.

 Disadvantages:

Weather unpredictable.

If personnel view this as a ski trip…  Skiing conditions better elsewhere…
