Please see below the email from Zoe White, chair of the Brussels Branch Royal British Legion with all the information for this year’s Poppy Appeal here in the Brussels area and Remembrance Sunday service at CWGC Heverlee.

If you are able to help in any way as a poppy appeal volunteer, or would like further information about the Poppy Appeal or the Remembrance Sunday service please contact Zoe, Phil or David directly.

Additionally, we have a collection tin and poppies at Welcombeek Community Centre if you are unable to get to any of the venues below – come and get your poppies at our weekly Tuesday coffee mornings from 1000-1200 or at other times by arrangement.

“Dear colleagues,

I’d like to take this opportunity to raise awareness of two events coming up, Poppy Appeal 2022 and Remembrance Sunday and ask for your support.

Poppy Appeal.  This year, the appeal runs from Thursday 27 October to Remembrance Sunday, 13 November. Support from NATO HQ has been amazing over recent years both during the Poppy Appeal and year-round from our NATO branch members and friends.  For this Poppy Appeal, I would like to ask for your generosity and support again in the following ways…

  • NATO HQ. Can you spare a lunchtime to support the Poppy Appeal at NATO HQ?  Following our great cooperation with the NATO Charity Bazaar last year, we are extending our Starbucks collecting table to warmly welcome our French delegation colleagues who will be collecting for their veterans charity and selling les bleuets.  We will be sharing the stand outside Starbucks over the lunch time periods (1145 – 1400) from Monday 31 October to Friday 11 November.  If you can offer an hour or two during the weekdays during those two weeks, please let me know which day and time you could cover so we can build a roster for the period.
  • Stonemanorhave generously offered us a table at their Everberg stores for weekends 29-30 Oct and 5-6 Nov between 1000 – 1600h to raise money for the RBL. If you or your family members could offer a couple of hours of your time as a poppy appeal volunteer we would be immensely grateful. Last year was an incredible success and we raised significantly more money than previous year of ‘tin only’ collections due to the presence of our volunteers.  As above, please drop me a line with your preference for times and dates and so we can build the plot.
  • Brussels and Leuven street collecting. We are going to try something new!  With kind support from the NATO Belgian delegation, the cities have granted permission for street collecting on Saturday 5 November in Brussels (1000-1600h) and Sunday 6 November in Leuven (1300 – 1700h during shopping Sunday).  Why not combine a day out shopping or family lunch with a couple of hours of volunteering?  As above, do let me know if you want to join us either in Brussels or Leuven J.
  • For those on social media, we will run a Facebook and twitter campaign from @RoyalBrussels to highlight both the Poppy Appeal (including online donations) and Remembrance Sunday. I would appreciate any help you can give in amplifying the messaging.

Remembrance Sunday.  We will conduct the Remembrance Sunday service in the beautiful and poignant setting of CWGC Heverlee on Sunday 13 November. We will be joined by our local patron, the UK Ambassador to Belgium, the Military Wives Choir and a battalion of scouts, guides, cubs and brownies. The event is open to all who wish to attend and we would love to see a great turnout from the NATO team again this year.  The service itself will last a maximum of 45 minutes.  I have attached the flyer and how to get to the location.  Please feel free to share the poster and details with anybody you feel may be interested.  More details are available on our website:  https://branches.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/brussels-branch/

If you have any questions about either the Poppy Appeal or Remembrance Sunday, please do not hesitate to contact me, Phil Hyde (Remembrance organiser) or David Bizley (Poppy Appeal coordinator)
